BTT and RTT for Class 2B: How to Pass the Theory Tests
What the Basic Theory Test and Riding Theory Test cover for Class 2B in Singapore, the pass mark, how to book, and a study plan that works.
Class 2B has two Traffic Police theory tests. Both are computer-based, with 50 multiple-choice questions and a pass mark of 45 (90 percent).
The Basic Theory Test (BTT)
The BTT covers the Highway Code: road signs and markings, right of way, speed limits, traffic light rules and penalties. The questions come from the official Basic Theory of Driving handbook published by the Traffic Police, which every centre sells and which is also available online.
Passing the BTT is what lets you apply for your Provisional Driving Licence (PDL), so take it early. Holders of a Class 3 or 3A licence are exempt.
The Riding Theory Test (RTT)
The RTT is only for motorcycle learners. It focuses on riding: braking distances, positioning in a lane, blind spots, riding in rain, carrying passengers and defensive riding. You must complete your centre’s riding and defensive riding theory lessons before you can book it.
An RTT pass lasts one year and you need a valid one on the day of your practical test. If your circuit lessons are going slowly, there is no rush to take it straight away.
How booking works
- Complete the required theory lessons at your centre.
- Take the centre’s practice tests (called the Theory Trial Test at SSDC and Internal Evaluation at CDC). You must pass one before you can book the real test.
- Book the Traffic Police test through your centre’s app or website. Tests are held at the centre.
- Bring your NRIC or passport on the day. Results are given immediately.
A study plan that works
- Read the handbook once, slowly. Most failed questions are about specific numbers: distances, speeds and penalties.
- Do practice tests until you score 48 or more consistently. A 45 on practice is too close to the line.
- Read every wrong answer’s explanation. Questions repeat in different wording, so understanding beats memorising.
- Learn the signs as pictures. Sign questions are quick marks if you can recognise them at a glance.

What is the passing mark for the BTT and RTT?
Both tests have 50 multiple-choice questions and you need at least 45 correct, which is 90 percent.
